Our Native Residents

Many wild animals live in our neighborhood.  And unless you are lucky you will only see a few.

The coyote above approached about 30 yards away and then turned down an alley.  It was unusual to see "him" during the day.

Here is a list of animals we encounter regularly.

As a caution, you should be aware that loose pets do not survive long outside because of the many predators who see your pet as a food source.  Even in backyards, small pets are a possible food source for bobcats who easily climb fences and are often seen on roofs.

This bobcat was "captured" by an automatic light that froze it in its steps around 6:30am.

But the good news is that none of these wild animals are normally a threat to human beings, unless they are cornered.

For Coyotes, Bobcats and Racoons we recommend that you observe but not approach them.  Many of them live along the nearby creeks or in the storm sewers, where they enter and exit with ease.  We often see them early in the mornings before dawn and in the early evenings.

If you are out for a walk and hear a lot of crows making noise, it often means they've sighted a predator and are following it through the neighborhood.

Squirrels are fun but also a nuisance because of the tendency to chew on parts of homes and build nests in attics.  Occasionally rats and mice will nest in attics as well.

It's not unusual to find evidence in your yard than an Owl recently stopped by for a meal.

Rabbits love to eat your favorite plants when they are young.

And beneath our soil, there are termites actively consuming nearby wood.

We rarely see snakes but be on the watch near creeks and in heavily wooded areas.

We invite you to keep track of all of your sightings too!
